Strengthening Educational Equity in Battle Creek

Michigan’s Battle Creek Public Schools has historically served a largely Black student population. For decades, they experienced declining enrollment, leading to resources being diverted to the area’s whiter and wealthier school districts. They needed support to rebuild their reputation, spread the word about their progress, and navigate crises as they arose.

I designed a wide variety of print and paid ad materials to engage parents and tell the district’s story, and collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to support Battle Creek’s turnaround and ensure greater educational equity for students of color.

Print ads for enrollment campaign

My Approach

  • Found new and creative ways to connect and foster joy with student families, incorporating student-focused aspects to the design.

  • Presented friendly and accessible communications, which helped the district establish trusting relationships with student families.

  • Showcased an attractive portfolio of school options within the district, which helped to win back families from around the community.

The Outcome

Battle Creek saw rising enrollment, grew trust with their communities, and developed their communications & creative capacity to continue this successful work in the future. Staff were thrilled with the creative materials that I produced. In particular, our enrollment ad campaign was stronger than ever, even despite the pandemic, leading to 55K clicks to BCPS website and 7 million impressions.
